The Farm at 754
The farm at 754 began in 2015 as an after school garden club, and now acts as the backbone of our full semester horticulture class. In our school garden, students work on many skills including basic construction, farming and gardening, fish and chicken care, soil and hydroponics system testing and maintenance, interpersonal skills, commerce skills, computer skills, and critical thinking and planning skills. Students have the opportunity to raise fresh herbs, fruits, and vegetables in raised beds and in a hydroponic and aquaponic indoor garden. Students cook meals and make food products like hot sauce, pickled vegetables, and dehydrated goods. Students have worked to build garden infrastructure, including raised beds, a chicken coop, a three-bin compost system, a vermiculture system, a shed, and irrigation systems for our raised beds. All herbs, fruits, vegetables, and eggs grown in our garden are used in the farm-to-table and farmers market and weekly cooking components of our horticulture program.
